The educational dilemma of Iraq

The problem of illiteracy in Iraq is seriously affecting this society these days.

"In addition to corruption, violence and terrorism, Iraqi society is facing dire economic conditions and threats from the spread of illiteracy," the Voice of Iraq newspaper wrote in describing the spread of illiteracy in Iraq.  All these issues have affected the people of the Iraqi society and caused many problems for them.  According to official statistics, the illiteracy rate among Iraqi adults reached 50% in 2018.  Rising levels of illiteracy also have adverse effects on the country's economy.

According to the newspaper, Israa al-Zahawi, an education expert, said that Iraq was suffering from an increase in illiteracy due to insecurity, poverty, and ISIL advances in one-third of the country.  The circumstances caused by the outbreak of Corona, which caused the trainings to take place through cyberspace, also had an impact on this issue.  This deprived many students of education.  There are still villages in this country that are deprived of internet.  Many families do not have the financial means to provide internet in their homes.  This has deprived many children of education over the past two years.

Haidar Farooq, a spokesman for the Ministry of Education, said there were no exact figures for the number of illiterates in Iraq, but that 5 million people in Iraq may be illiterate.

According to the Voice of Iraq newspaper, human rights activist Mawlid Ahmad also said that the spread of illiteracy in Iraq has become a dangerous phenomenon that threatens the head of Iraqi society.  Most of those who do not know how to read and write in Iraq are women;  Even in this country, there are families and even communities that do not believe in the right of women to education at all.
