Growing poverty and the silent suffering of the hungry.
The World Food Program (WFP) estimates that some 5.3 million Zimbabweans, who make up about a third of the country's population, are living in food insecurity and 8 million are living in extreme poverty.
Factors that have taken Zimbabwe's food security situation to a very "serious" level according to the 2017 Global Hunger Index (ranked 108 out of 119) are many, but widespread poverty, AIDS, limited job opportunities, repeated shocks from climate change, and economic instability have all severely limited access to adequate food.
Even before the war in Ukraine, food, fuel, and fertilizer costs were rising, in addition, drought is forecast for the coming season, which will cause more shortages and even higher prices for the main products. With the sharp rise in fertilizer prices due to disruptions in exports from Russia, many Zimbabwean farmers are finding it challenging to produce, as dry weather will negatively affect crop production performance in most parts of the country.
According to the Zimbabwe Farmers' Union, fertilizer prices have risen by 30% in the last year.
Once a prosperous country, Zimbabwe has recently been hit by droughts and hurricanes, power outages, foreign exchange shortages, and unprecedented inflation.
