Exacerbation of food insecurity in crisis areas.
Rescuers believe the war in Ukraine will increase hunger in the world's worst crisis areas. Therefore, if donor governments do not increase their commitments, humanitarian aid will decrease and these conditions will cost human lives.
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) on Monday called on heads of state and government to renew their commitment to support people affected by crises around the world.
Bob Kitchen, deputy director of emergency relief at the International Rescue Committee (IRC), said the food situation in the Horn of Africa was critical and would continue to worsen. Because this region depends on the grain of Ukraine and Russia. In addition, agricultural products in the region last year fell sharply due to low rainfall. According to him, at least four million Somalis will suffer from famine by June.
At the same time, according to the aid organization, only less than 4% of the UN humanitarian program is funded. The situation is similar in crisis areas such as Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, and Ethiopia. According to the International Rescue Committee (IRC), grain shortages from Russia and Ukraine, a lack of humanitarian aid funding and a sharp rise in food prices will "severely" exacerbate the food security crisis in the world's disadvantaged areas.
"If donor governments do not increase their commitments, vital humanitarian aid will be reduced and it will cost millions of lives," Kitchen said, referring to the United Nations.
According to the United Nations, international relief organizations need about $ 4.5 billion for a rapid humanitarian response program to meet vital needs, prevent the spread of hunger, disease, possible death and displacement. The various countries that donate money to these organizations are scheduled to meet soon to discuss the conflict in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis, and to address the displaced in these countries.
