UN Warned- Afghanistan in 2022

The dimensions of the catastrophe in 2022.

Since the August 15 Taliban takeover of Kabul, an already war-devastated economy once kept alive by international donations alone is now on the verge of collapse. There is not enough money for hospitals.

The UN warns nearly 23 million Afghans – about 55 per cent of the population – are facing extreme levels of hunger, with nearly nine million at risk of famine as winter takes hold in the impoverished, landlocked country.

The statistics provided by the United Nations are grim: almost 24 million people in Afghanistan, about 60 percent of the population, suffer from acute hunger. As many as 8.7 million Afghans are coping with famine.

Since the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan last August, the country has plunged into financial chaos, with inflation and unemployment surging after Washington froze billions of dollars of the country’s assets and international financial institutions suspending funds. Moreover, aid supplies have been heavily disrupted due to US sanctions.

The crisis Afghanistan faces this winter is of a magnitude not seen for at least 20 years, when the Taliban was removed by US-backed forces and replaced by governments in Kabul who relied heavily on foreign support - both financial and military.
