Yemen is on the verge of an obvious catastrophe

New statistics on the famine and displacement.

"The heartbreaking statistics confirm that we are counting down to an irreversible catastrophe in Yemen and that the time to avoid it is almost over," David Beazley, WFP Executive Director, said in a recent statement.

"If we do not receive a significant new budget immediately, there will be widespread famine. But if we act now, there is still a chance to prevent the impending catastrophe and save millions."

Yemen's dire hunger crisis is "on the verge of a catastrophe" as analysis of new data from the war-torn country shows that current food insecurity is unprecedented, UN chiefs said on Monday.

Today, more than 17 million Yemenis live in complete food insecurity. Nearly two million more people are expected to be on emergency starvation in the coming months, bringing the total number of people with emergency needs to more than 7 million by the end of the year.

Seven years of civil war in Yemen have left millions starving and displaced. Recent figures released by the World Food Program and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) show that 4 million people have been displaced inside Yemen as a result of this catastrophic war. 12 million people need emergency food assistance to survive, and more than half of children under the age of 5 experience acute malnutrition.
