Afghanistan: Increasing Child Labour

Afghanistan: Increasing Child Labour

Children, the silent victims of poverty.

The fall of the Republican government and the dominant of Taliban rule in the country led to unemployment of many people, many families emigrated in the hope of a better life. Living and working in neighboring countries is not easy.

While the international community is trying to deliver humanitarian aid to those in need, the Taliban are either giving it to people close to them or blocking it in parts of Afghanistan.

A report was released last week showing that the Taliban had looted a shipment of humanitarian aid in Badakhshan province. Poverty and unemployment have forced families to send their children to the streets for work or even to use them for begging.

The number of orphaned children in Afghanistan is increasing every day, and institutions that used to support these children have limited or stopped their activities.

"All financial aid to institutions that support these children has been cut off and they have been forced to stop their activities," said Yousef Nawabi, head of the Ashianeh Institute, which used to support orphans. In such a situation, children have no place to live other than on the streets and are considered the best target for criminal gangs in cities.

Poverty in Afghanistan has existed for a long time, but in the last nine months it has increased so much that all family members have to work to keep their stomachs full. The Washington Post recently published a report on the increase in working children in Afghanistan. The report states that thousands of children are searching for bread and livelihoods in the streets, crossroads and trash cans; Even children who have not left school work on the streets until late at night after school.
