The death and injuries of eight individuals.
Local sources claim that suspected Islamic extremists in Sudan assassinated a church priest along with three other Christians. The attackers also injured four additional people who were with the victims.
The team was ambushed by assailants while staying the night in Kadogli, the capital of South Kordofan state in Sudan. The group had traveled to the area for evangelistic service.
Residents of the area think that Islamic extremists, who have scared locals with their attacks since 2011, are watching movements both inside and outside of the city and likely were aware of the evangelistic team's arrival in their area.
Omar al-Bashir Islamicist dictatorship ended two years ago, and while religious freedom in Sudan has improved, it appears that the nightmare of persecution by non-governmental extremist groups has returned with the military takeover of October 25, 2021.
Christians in Sudan worry that the oppressive and brutal elements of Islamic law may reappear.
Prior to the coup and, it appears, even now, non-state actors have been persecuting Christians.
When Sudan was ranked 13th on Open Doors' global ranking for 2021, it was removed from the top 10 most dangerous nations for Christians for the first time in six years. However, the International Religious Freedom Report from the US Department of State shows that even though the situation has somewhat improved as a result of decriminalizing apostasy and putting an end to the burning of churches, the attitude of extreme Islam still rules the cultural spheres of society.
Christians still experience discrimination on a variety of levels, including challenges to getting permission to build churches.
