Declining Christian population in the Middle East.
Michel Butros Al-Jisri is the only surviving Christian in Idlib. In an interview published by the New York Times, he celebrated Christmas this year alone, without any ceremony.
The city of Idlib is one of the few areas in Syria that is still run by Islamic groups, and churches have been closed from the beginning.
Many Christians have either been killed or fled the city. Michel is the only surviving Christian in Idlib. He is an example of the Christian community in the Middle East, whose population is shrinking day by day.
In 2019, according to statistics released by British authorities, the Christian population of North Africa and Middle East has decreased from 20% of the total population to 4%. In fact, the report shows that the war and unrest in the area have targeted most of the Christian demographics, and their population is declining day by day due to poverty and war.
Michel Al-Jisri was from a Greek Orthodox Christian family who went to St. Mary's Orthodox Church to perform rituals. The church, once a landmark of the city with its towers and bells, today there is is no longer a church, nor a Christian.
The changing demographics of Christians in the Middle East are accelerating with increasing intensity every day, and it is feared that the continuation of the situation in this area will seriously damage the composition of the Christian population.
