Countdown Begins for Afghan Refugees Pakistan

Pakistan Interior Minister's Statement Raises Concerns from UN.

In a matter of days, Pakistan's deadline for the forced removal of Afghan refugees is fast approaching. The interim government's Interior Minister, Sarfaraz Bugti, recently made a significant announcement, setting in motion a two-stage deportation plan for refugees lacking valid documentation.

As per a report from Geo News, Bugti outlined the plan. In the initial stage, asylum seekers without proper residency and travel documents will face deportation. Subsequently, in the second phase, those with a "Proof of Registration Card" (POR) and registration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees will also be subject to deportation.

It's worth noting that the Minister of Interior of Pakistan has declared it illegal for Afghan refugees to possess a Proof of Registration Card. However, under the "Foreign Nationals Act" of 1946, these cardholders have the legal right to reside in Pakistan and cannot be arrested.

Recent reports have highlighted the expulsion of 77 legally recognized Afghan refugees from Pakistan, prompting a reaction from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The organization's spokesperson, Qaiser Afridi, confirmed that the Pakistani government has provided assurances that no action will be taken against those holding the Proof of Registration Card.

The government of Pakistan had previously issued a warning, stating that if the approximately 1.7 million Afghan immigrants do not leave the country by November 10, they will face arrest and forced deportation, with the confiscation of their assets. Additionally, Islamabad authorities have imposed a limit of 50,000 rupees (around $180) for Afghan refugees departing the country.
