Left Thousands Dead and Missing
Survivors of a devastating flood that inundated the heart of a Libyan city are now sifting through the wreckage on Thursday, desperately searching for their loved ones among the thousands who are either dead or missing. Authorities are growing increasingly concerned about the potential outbreak of diseases due to decomposing bodies.
Derna Mayor Abdulmenam al-Ghaithi, speaking to Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television, estimated that the death toll in the city might range from 18,000 to 20,000, given the extensive destruction.
In response to this catastrophic event, rescue teams have arrived from countries including Egypt, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and Qatar. Turkey is even dispatching a ship loaded with equipment to establish two field hospitals.
The shoreline has become a haunting scene, strewn with the remnants of homes - clothes, toys, furniture, shoes, and personal belongings carried away by the relentless deluge. The disaster has left over 10,000 people unaccounted for, and tens of thousands more have been displaced from their homes.
The critical challenge now lies in ensuring that the international community responds effectively to the urgent needs and requests of the affected governments.
