Another tragedy on the deadly route from Africa to Spain
According to Algerian Al-Hayat TV, 11 migrants who were planning to travel to Europe drowned off the coast of Algeria. Five people, including two children, were also rescued.
A Spanish relief organization CIPIMD also confirmed on Monday that a group of migrants had drowned off the coast of Algeria.
According to reports, all of these migrants are from Foucault, which is located 70 km west of Algeria. Survivors of the accident are said to have waited in the water for 14 hours before being rescued by an Egyptian ship.
According to the Algerian Ministry of Defense, the Coast Guard prevented 172 people from "illegally leaving" the country from May 4 to 11 and rescued another 170 people on "inappropriate boats".
Last year, 4,400 people who tried to migrate to Spain by sea lost their lives or went missing, according to the Spanish organization Caminando Frontras.
According to the United Nations, more than 31,000 migrants tried to reach Europe by sea last year.
