Continuation of attacks by extremists against Christians.
According to a UN report, the violence of the Islamic State-affiliated rebels in the northern parts of the Christian-majority Mozambique has displaced more than 784,000 people.
Announcing the latest statistics on internal displacement in the country, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in a statement that it is "concerned about the unstable security situation in Cabo Delgado, especially the recent attacks in historic areas."
Islamic extremists are taking advantage of the crisis in the coastal province of Cabo Delgado in the northeast of the country. The civil war started in 2017 over gas, ruby, graphite, gold and other natural resources.
In March 2021, the United States designated the Islamic State of Mozambique as a "global terrorist". ISIS-Mozambique is also known as Ansar al-Sunnah and in other regions it is known as al-Shabaab. According to reports, the group pledged allegiance to ISIS in April 2018 and has killed thousands of civilians so far.
The northern province of Cabo Delgado is a predominantly Muslim region where at least 300 Christians have been killed for their faith. Also, there have been more than 100 attacks on churches in this area.
