January: The severest month for Yemen

Crisis growth and civilian casualties.

The UN Special Representative for Yemen, Hans Grandberg, and the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, David Gersley, issued a joint statement expressing concern over the current situation in the country.

A January 21 airstrike in Saada prison left 91 dead and 226 wounded, making it the worst civilian casualty in Yemen in three years. Over the past few weeks, airstrikes and missiles have damaged hospitals, telecommunications infrastructure, airports, water facilities and a school.

According to the Special Representative and Coordinator for Yemeni Affairs, escalating tensions are exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, hampering relief efforts, jeopardizing regional security, and undermining efforts to end the conflict.

Last month, the World Food Program warned that the organization's budget for continuing to provide food aid to 13 million people in Yemen was running out. Eight million Yemenis have received less aid since the beginning of January.

The two UN officials stressed the importance of holding the parties involved accountable for violations of international humanitarian law.

Since the beginning of January, with the escalation of tensions, the Ministry of Health has registered 150 deaths and 350 injuries.
