Murder of a Christian student by Muslim students

Nigeria is still a dangerous country for Christians.

According to the ICC, Deborah Emmanuel, a 25-year-old Christian student at Shehu Shagari College in Sokoto, Nigeria, was fatally beaten and burned by several Muslim students last week.

Deborah was a member of the ECWA Church and lived with her parents in Sokoto. The day before the incident, she apparently clashed with her classmates after sending a WhatsApp message that considered an insult to Islamic sanctities by them.

A video posted on social media, reviewed by ICC staff at the scene and analysts abroad, shows Deborah lying on the ground trying to cover her head with her bloody left arm, Muslim students gathered around and stoning her cryin (Allahu Akbar).

According to a student, Muslim classmates and professors hate Christian students. He also said that college officials witnessed Deborah being killed but could not stop the Muslim students.

The state government has only called for the temporary closure of the college without ordering the perpetrators of the crime. Despite severe persecution of Christians in Nigeria, the country was removed from the list of countries dangerous to Christians in November 2021 by Open Doors.
