Nigeria: unprecedented increase in the persecution of Christians

The silence of the government and human rights institutions.

According to the Vatican news agency, at least 68 Christians have been killed in just one state in the central region of Nigeria in the last two months, and more have been kidnapped or displaced.

The country of Nigeria is equally divided between the Christian majority in the south and the Muslim majority in the north. Most of the conflicts occur in the central region, which includes the most fertile areas. The terrorists disguise themselves as nomadic herdsmen to cover the real goal of their attacks, which is to drive Christians out of their lands.

Benue state is known as the food basket of Nigeria, but terrorism has affected the food supply situation. Farmers who could typically provide for themselves and their families are now forced to survive on charity.

The main target of ongoing attacks by Fulani terrorists, who are mostly Muslims, are the mainly Christian farming communities in the central region of Nigeria. The reasons for these attacks are complex. Conflicts between nomadic herders and settled farmers date back centuries, but the use of firearms in the past few years has made these attacks far more deadly and destructive.

Nigerian churches have complained many times about the government's silence regarding the attacks of the Fulani tribe, armed groups, and Islamic extremists in Nigeria over the past several years, but they have not received any sign of positive government intervention.

The scale of the killing, displacement and wanton destruction of property by Fulani Jihadi militias is only aimed at evacuating Christian communities in Nigeria and seizing their lands. It is clear that the current Nigerian government is currently doing nothing about these ongoing attacks.
