Poverty in Afghanistan

Death of a child due to malnutrition in Kabul.

A man in Kabul claims that his one-year-old son died as a result of poverty. She says that not getting enough food left his child severely malnourished and eventually died.

Mohammad, who was displaced to Kabul with his wife and three young children as a result of previous fighting, says his family is suffering from extreme hunger.

"Unemployment and poverty have prevented me from meeting my child 's needs properly," he said.

Thirty-year-old Mohammad works for ten to one hundred afghanis a day. He says he has not paid his rent for several months.

Afghanistan is in a difficult economic situation, especially after the return of the Taliban. The freezing of the country's assets has created a huge level of inflation across the country. According to the latest figures released by the United Nations, nearly 90 percent of the country's population is living below the poverty line.

The Red Crescent said on Saturday that 4,500 families in Kunar, Takhar and Zabul provinces displaced by war and natural disasters were in urgent need of livelihood and health assistance.

Meanwhile, the winter cold, natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes at the beginning of this year, have left many people in impassable areas of the country with acute livelihood problems.
