Senegal: Dozens of migrants drowned

Thousands deaths documented last year.

According to Senegal's President Macky Sall, at least 15 individuals have tragically drowned after a boat carrying migrants and refugees capsized near the capital city of Dakar.

This incident represents another distressing event involving desperate individuals embarking on treacherous sea journeys in an attempt to reach Europe.

The navy discovered the bodies early Monday morning, and based on the type of boat they were found in, they are believed to be migrants, as confirmed by Ndeye Top Gueye, the deputy mayor of the Ouakam neighborhood in Dakar where the bodies were located.

Firefighters and divers are currently conducting ongoing search operations in the area to find any remaining bodies.

Thousands of people from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region undertake hazardous sea routes in dinghy boats to reach Europe.

Tragically, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), nearly 3,800 people lost their lives last year. The central Mediterranean route, where the incident occurred, has been recorded by the United Nations as the most perilous migrant crossing in the world, with over 20,000 deaths and disappearances documented since 2014.
