Quadrupling of migration.
According to the International Organization for Migration, between August and December 2021, about 990,000 Afghan citizens left their country and migrated to Iran and Pakistan. They have been forced to flee to neighboring countries after the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan due to death threats and poverty.
Although many Afghans working with international organizations and US forces in Afghanistan were evacuated last August, some Afghans who worked under the former government and were threatened remain in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, those who worked in the military with the former government and foreign forces and were threatened by the Taliban have been forced to flee to Iran or Pakistan.
Zaranj is a border town in southwestern Afghanistan from where immigrants mostly go to Iran. According to witnesses, about 5,000 to 6,000 people cross the Afghan-Iranian border every day. This figure has quadrupled since the previous government.
Several Taliban fighters in the area, who did not want to be named, told AFP that at least 70 people had been killed by Iranian border guards in the past six months. Iran, which hosted 3.4 million Afghans in 2020, continues to deport Afghan refugees after the Taliban came to power. According to the Taliban regime, more than 2000 refugees are deported from Iran daily.
