The dire situation of migrants in Libyan camps

Women are exposed to the worst violence.

Tens of thousands of people from South African countries try to reach Europe from Libya every year. Libyan government institutions, human traffickers, and militias capture migrants and keep them in camps.

The investigation officers regarding Libyan immigrants have been appointed by the United Nations and in 2020 by the Human Rights Council of the United Nations, and their term will end in the next few days.

According to the organization's report published on Wednesday, crimes against humanity, such as murder, torture, illegal captivity, rape, and "other inhumane crimes" are committed in Libyan camps. This report states that women in these camps are forced to engage in sexual intercourse in exchange for food.

According to this report, traffickers use sexual violence to extort money from migrant families. Investigators have collected documents that show that migrants in Libya are being arbitrarily and "systematically" detained.

In this report, it is stated that Libyan camps have become so notorious among migrants that women and girls consult a doctor before traveling to this country and use hormonal contraceptives to avoid unwanted pregnancies through such violence. be prevented.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has said that about 5,600 refugees and migrants are kept in government detention centers in Libya under inhumane conditions.

In 2019, the German government has allocated more than nine million euros for humanitarian aid to immigrants, asylum seekers, and internally displaced people, as well as basic health services.

The German Catholic News Agency reported that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees had registered 53,000 migrants and asylum seekers in Libya.

Most of the immigrants who are present in Libya are from African countries, they hope to be able to enter the European Union through Libya.
