The number of displaced children exceeded 36 million

The latest UNICEF report on the situation of children.

Conflict, violence and other crises have displaced nearly 36.5 million children from their homes by the end of 2021, the highest number since World War II, according to recent UNICEF figures. This figure includes 13.7 million refugee and asylum-seeking children and nearly 22.8 million children displaced within the country due to conflict and violence.

These figures do not include children who have been displaced by natural or climatic events, or children who have just been displaced in 2022.

The number of these children has increased as a result of the wars and conflicts in countries such as Afghanistan and Yemen, UNICEF said in a report. According to the organization, another 7.3 million children will be homeless in 2021 due to natural disasters.

In the statement, UNICEF called on governments around the world to provide greater protection for displaced persons, migrants and children. As of late 2021, this figure does not include Ukrainian children who have been homeless since the Russian invasion. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 2 million children have been displaced and another 3 million have been left homeless inside the country.

According to a UNICEF statement, more than a third of displaced children live in African countries (3.9 million), a quarter in Europe and Central Asia (2.6 million) and 13 percent (1.4 million) in the Middle East and North Africa.

About two-thirds of displaced children are enrolled in primary schools, according to a UNICEF statement. While only a third of them have access to educational facilities.
