Turkey: Death of seven other asylum seekers

Germany asked Greece for an explanation.

Following the news that the bodies of 12 migrants were found by Turkish rescue forces on the border with Greece, the news agencies announced today that seven more asylim seekers had died along the way.

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu announced the incident yesterday by posting pictures of the migrants who had lost their lives, and wrote that the Greek border guard was responsible for the tragedy, leaving the migrants without clothes, in the cold. 

The governor of Edirne province, announced in a statement: "Unfortunately, the number of bodies of illegal immigrants who died of cold in Edirne province after being pushed by Greek troops to the border with Turkey has increased to 19 people.

Accordingly, the bodies of seven other migrants were found today by Turkish rescue forces in the border areas with Greece.

The governor of Edirne announced yesterday the discovery of 11 bodies belonging to immigrants in the border areas with Greece. An immigrant who was taken to a government hospital also died. The identities and nationalities of the victims have not yet been announced.

Turkish rescue forces are currently searching for other possible migrants in the area. Medical teams are present, and the search continues using drones.

Following the news, the German Foreign Ministry issued a statement in response to the deaths of several refugees on the Greek-Turkish border, calling the incident "worrying" and saying: "An investigation is very important in order to clarify the dimensions. Athens must explain the deaths of asylum seekers on the border."
