Famine threatens 23 million Afghans.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grande said in Kabul on Tuesday that the war in Ukraine should not "forget" the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and it is a necessity that raising funds to save the lives of its people would continue.
"All the world's attention is now on Ukraine," he added. My message, however, is that we must not forget the crisis in other parts of the world, including Afghanistan. "Afghanistan is in dire need of international assistance, and humanitarian aid must be provided, no matter how many crises there are in other parts of the world at the same time."
Since the Taliban took office in August last year, Afghanistan has been in a deep financial crisis, exacerbating the humanitarian situation in the country after years of war and drought.
According to the United Nations, famine now threatens 23 million Afghans, or 55 percent of the population.
Afghanistan's assets abroad are still frozen, and international aid, which accounts for about 75 percent of Afghanistan's budget.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has previously requested $ 340 million in aid for 2022, but only about $ 100 million has been raised.
