According to the United Nations, more than five million people in Syria are suffering from water shortages
UN Secretary-General spokesman Stephen Dujarric told reporters in New York that reports indicate that five million people have been affected by the ongoing water crisis in northern and northeastern Syria.
He added that due to declining water levels, broken water pumping systems and the low capacity of hydropower plants, not all people across northern Syria will be able to access adequate and safe water.
Lack of safe drinking water increases water-borne diseases and coronary problems, Dujarric said.
He added that the United Nations, along with its partners, had launched a six-month plan for the 3.4 million people most affected in northern Syria.
Dujarric said the plan requires $ 251 million to solve problems in various sectors, but is currently receiving $ 51 million.
