Yemen is still the scene of the world's greatest humanitarian crisis.
Speaking at the 48th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, noted that the seventh anniversary of the civil war in Yemen has passed: "Since March 2015, the date Intense clashes between the warring parties in Yemen So far, 8,218 civilians have been killed, including 2,270 children, and 13,283 civilians have been injured.
Emphasizing that the warring parties in Yemen did not fulfill their obligations under international responsibilities to establish human rights and international law, Bachelet said that the warring parties also continued to violate international law, such as quality detention, extrajudicial executions, torture and arming of children. .
"Yemen is still witnessing the heaviest and biggest humanitarian crisis in the world," she added. More than 20 million people in Yemen need humanitarian aid and protection. Of these, 12 million are in critical condition. So far, 4 million people have been displaced from their homes, 83% of whom are women and children.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has called on all sectors to help prevent a severe food shortage in Yemen, noting that the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus has delayed the delivery of humanitarian aid to the region and efforts to reach an understanding between the warring parties in Yemen.
It is worth noting that in Yemen, which has long been plagued by political instability, Iranian-backed Houthis and forces affiliated with the Yemeni government are fighting each other.
While the Houthis have been in control of the Yemeni capital Sana'a and some surrounding areas since September 2014, Saudi-led coalition forces have been supporting government forces against the Houthis since March 2015.
