Bangladesh: Emigration of Christians from the country

Increasing persecution and authority’s indifference.

According to the latest national census in Bangladesh, which was published last week, since 2011, many religious minorities in the country have migrated in search of a safer life, among which Christians have the highest number in relation to their population.

The increase in the migration of Christians from Bangladesh is not limited to terrorist attacks against them, it is caused by the lack of attention of the country's statesmen.

According to the report of the Bangladesh Religious Unity Council, the authorities and leaders of this country did not fulfill any of their promises in 2018 regarding the protection of religious minorities, and the number of attacks and threats against religious minorities increased day by day.

According to the report of Asian human rights organizations, from January 2013 to September 2021, about 3,679 attacks against religious minorities occurred in Bangladesh, which is the main cause of migration, or in other words, the self-imposed exile of Christians from this country.

According to a US State Department report, Bangladeshi Christians face evictions, land seizures, terrorist attacks, and threats from Islamists, a sign of growing religious intolerance in the country.

During the past ten years, the leaders of the Christian community of Bangladesh have repeatedly requested the government of this country to take all the necessary measures to ensure the security of the religious minorities of this country by publishing a joint statement with other religious minorities, but each time this request was met with the authority’s indifference.

Bangladesh's Christian community, due to massive migration, now constitutes less than one percent of the country's population, and this small number also faces many persecutions
