Millions were displaced.
Since early June, torrential rains have completely submerged about 94% of the city of Sonamganj and 84% of the Silhat area in northeastern Bangladesh on the Indian border. It is estimated that 7.2 million people have lost their shelter and are in urgent need of emergency assistance.
Parts of Meghalaya have experienced the heaviest rainfall in recent decades, leading to the overflow of major river systems between India and Bangladesh.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has submitted an emergency request of $ 7.8 million to support the Bangladesh Red Crescent to increase and expand its efforts to prevent and reduce injuries.
Focus more on the immediate needs of the affected population for the first three months. After that, recovery assistance is to be provided to ensure that the affected population survives the crisis in a sustainable manner.
Kazi Shafiq Azam, Secretary-General of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, said:
We have never seen such a flood in this region. Hundreds of thousands of people have lost their homes and have no shelter to stay in. Our connection to a large part of the tsunami and floods has been completely cut off due to severe road disruptions and power outages.
