Immigrants: The silent victims of the fire in Greece

The number of victims reached 20.

Following the discovery of yet another migrant's remains within the forest fire-affected zones in Greece, the overall death toll from the inferno has now climbed to 20 individuals.

Greek authorities revealed on Tuesday that they had uncovered the bodies of 20 individuals near the Turkish border, with strong indications that they were migrants. The lifeless bodies were recovered to the north of Alexandroupolis, as confirmed by Yance Ortopios, the spokesperson for the Greek fire department. This particular area has frequently served as a passage for unauthorized immigrants seeking entry into Greece.

For several consecutive days, wildfires have been ravaging the northeastern part of Greece, as well as several other regions within the country. Orthopoios mentioned that given the absence of any missing persons reports within the area, "we are led to presume that there were individuals who surreptitiously entered the country."

Migrants who clandestinely cross into Greece from Turkey, primarily utilizing the coastal border of Oros, often seek refuge in the wooded expanse of Dadia.

The wildfires have been relentless in their spread across the northeastern sector of Greece, extending their reach to include the islands of Oia and Kythnos, along with the Boeotia region situated north of Athens.

As of Monday, with the discovery of yet another suspected immigrant's body within the vicinity, the cumulative count of fire-related casualties has surged to 20 individuals.
