Haitian hostage-takers demanded $ 17 million to free the hostages

According to the Haitian Minister of Justice, a group of kidnappers in the country who kidnapped 17 American and Canadian religious missionaries in Haiti have demanded a million dollars for the release of each of them, which is a total of seventeen million dollars.

The group, which also kidnapped a Catholic cleric in April, is known for extortion and kidnapping;  The cleric was later released, but it is unclear whether money was paid for his release.

All 17 recently abducted are US citizens, except for one Canadian.

Five children, including a two-year-old, are among those abducted.

The missionaries were working with the international aid organization when they were taken on Saturday by the 400 Mawozo gang.

The gang, whose name roughly translates to "inexperienced men," is known for brazen killings, ransom kidnappings and extorting businessmen.
