Immigrant populations exceeded 70 million.
More than ever in the last two decades, people have been forced to emigrate. Many of them leave their homeland because of the devastating consequences of the war or the impact of climate change.
While migration is a part of people's lives around the world, more than two-thirds of the world's refugees are from just five countries affected by war, ethnic persecution and the collapse of government institutions: Syria, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Myanmar. And Somalia.
Most refugees never go beyond the neighboring country. About four out of five asylum seekers live in neighboring countries. The vast majority live in developing countries that do not have standard living facilities.
Twice the number of refugees fleeing international borders are displaced within their own country. Internally displaced persons are often overlooked because international agencies consider their care to be the responsibility of their respective countries. Many of these countries are seeking access to similar aid and support.
An increasing number of people are being forced to flee their country for a "long" period of five years or more, including millions of Afghans whose refugee crisis has lasted four decades.
Climate change is expected to displace tens of millions of people in their home countries over the next three decades, according to international organizations. The rate of migration over the next two decades is projected to be much higher due to climate change than migration due to war and insecurity.
Women and children often face greater risks during migration, including sexual violence. Children are the most vulnerable. Many of them have been forced into military activity by militant groups, and a large percentage of them work to support their families.
Migration by numbers
1: Currently, about 71 million people are displaced.
2: Approximately 26 million of them are refugees who have fled to another country.
3: About half of the world's refugees are children under 18 years old.
4: More than 60% of refugees live in cities. Less than a third live in camps.
5: %3.5 of the world's population are international immigrants
