Refugees in 2022

United Nations report and future prospects.

The United Nations published its annual report on the situation of refugees in the world.

According to this report, one hundred million people have been forced to leave their homes in 2022.

This figure of 100 includes all those who were forced to leave their country due to war, violence, examples of human rights violations, and persecution.

This figure in 2021 was about 90 million people. Prolonged war and conflict have been key drivers of migration in many parts of the world, including Ukraine, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Syria, and Myanmar.

In Yemen, more than 325,000 people, including migrants and the communities that host them, have been displaced by the war.

Despite the dire situation in Yemen, this country is still the destination and transit point for migrants leaving the Horn of Africa.

More than 80,000 Syrians call the large "Zaatari" camp in Jordan their home. Many of them may be forced to stay abroad for the foreseeable future. Jordan hosts about 675,000 registered refugees from Syria.

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled their homes in Myanmar following a series of military attacks. Almost a million people live in the sprawling "Cox's Bazar" camp across the border in neighboring Bangladesh.

More than 7 million Ukrainian refugees are registered across Europe.

Thousands of desperate migrants consider Europe a safe destination and place their lives in the hands of human traffickers, embarking on perilous journeys across the Mediterranean Sea to reach safety.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that governments around the world have pledged more than $1 billion, an unprecedented figure, to provide a lifeline to people displaced by war, violence, and human rights abuses.
