call for an end to the war
More than 270 Russian Orthodox priests have signed a joint letter calling on the Russian government for immediate peace and a ceasefire.
"We remind government officials of the fact that they may refuse to judge humanely, but they will not be safe from divine judgment." the author of the letter, Andrei Kordochkin, head of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Madrid, told Premiere News about the motives and content of the letter.
"Our message is not to condemn, our message is not to judge," he said. "The message is to show the way to repentance and salvation."
"We are deeply saddened by the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Ukraine," the statement said.
"We remind you that each person's life is a precious and unique gift from God, and therefore we wish all soldiers - including Russians and Ukrainians - a safe return to their homes and families."
"In addition to bloodshed, the invasion of an independent Ukraine is a violation of the freedom and right to self-determination of its citizens. "It will not destroy Ukraine, but it will ruin the people, the economy, the morals and the future of Russia."
