The number of displaced people in the world exceeded 100 million.
The number of people displaced by war, violence, human rights abuses, and persecution has crossed the 100 million mark for the first time in history.
"This is a record that should never have been set and should be seen as a wake-up call to resolve and prevent the destructive wars that have forced innocent people to flee their homes," said Filippo Grande, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
According to new data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the number of IDPs worldwide has increased to 90 million by the end of 2021 due to new waves of violence or long wars in countries such as Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Myanmar, Nigeria, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In addition, the Ukraine war has displaced 8 million people this year and displaced more than 6 million asylum seekers.
This figure is equivalent to the population of the fourteenth most populous country in the world. According to a recent report by the Center for Internal Displacement Monitoring (IDMC), this figure includes refugees and asylum seekers, as well as the 53 million people displaced within their borders due to the war.
"The international response to those displaced by the war in Ukraine has been very positive," Filippo Grande added. Kindness is still alive, and we need the same cooperation for all crises around the world. But in the end, humanitarian aid is a relief, not a cure. The only solution to reverse this trend is peace and stability.
In 2001, the United Nations General Assembly, in Resolution 55.76, declared June 20 each year as World Refugee Day. The purpose of this action was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Geneva Convention, which is a guiding document for the work of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. This year, this day was held for the twentieth time.
The Geneva Convention was originally designed to protect refugees and displaced persons in Europe after World War II, and in 1967 a protocol was added to it that stipulates the protection and protection of refugees worldwide. The signatory states have a responsibility to provide refugees with a safe haven and health, education, and social facilities.
