China & Nigeria, top religious freedom violators
The Second Annual International Conference on Religious Freedom will be held June 28-30 in Washington, DC. Topics include anti-Semitism in Europe and the ongoing attacks on Christians in Nigeria.
Nury Turkel, the new chairman of the US Committee on International Religious Freedom, spoke of the importance of the meeting to the Washington Times, expressing hope that it would help others see religious freedom as a national security issue. "The international community has repeatedly made this mistake - especially policymakers and liberal democracies - waiting for religious persecution and human rights abuses to reach the level of a humanitarian crisis. "I think this is a wrong approach."
"I hope that from this context, special attention will be paid to some of the worst cases of human rights violations, religious persecution in Nigeria and India, as well as the rise of anti-Semitism," Turkel said.
More than 80 countries around the world use advanced technology to harass religious groups. The international community is dealing with a new kind of religious persecution and genocide that is quietly being developed and further promoted by Communist China. Many of these countries use Chinese surveillance technology that threatens civil liberties. "And they are religious, even democratic norms."
USCIRF Commissioner Frank Wolf, a former member of Congress, emphasized the importance of the conference, saying: "Attitudes towards violations of religious freedom have diminished, and fewer people are paying attention to issues of religious freedom at the international level."
The ICC, which will attend the conference, has published extensive reports on the persecution of Christians in Nigeria, as well as a special report on the attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, militant attacks in Fulani, and the worldwide abduction of priests.
