Attack on two churches in Spain

Four people were injured and one person was killed.

Four people were killed and injured in a simultaneous terrorist attack on two churches of San Isidro and Nostra Senora in Spain.

According to local news agencies, the suspect is a 25-year-old man from Morocco.

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlasca said in a telephone interview that he believes the suspect, identified as Yassin Kanjaa, likely carried out the operation alone without the cooperation of a third party.

According to the witnesses who were present at the scene of the incident, the suspect attacked the members of the churches with a machete while shouting Allahu Akbar and death to Christians.

In this attack, four people were injured and one person was killed. The condition of one of the injured, who is a pastor of one of the churches, has been declared critical.

Christian and Muslim organizations in Spain have condemned the attacks, while Spain's Vox party has apparently blamed the government's lax immigration policies.

Last October, the Migration Policy Institute published a report in which it declared Spain "one of the top destinations for migrants".

More than 7 million immigrants live in Spain.

Across Europe, hate-motivated attacks against Christians have increased in recent years. More than 519 incidents were classified as hate attacks against Christians in 2021, 30 of which took place in Spain, according to a report published last fall by the Watchdog on Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians in Europe.
