Mistreatment of immigrants on the Hungary-Serbia border

There are reports of torture of migrants.

What has been obtained from the statements of patients and the verification of medical data by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) shows that the Hungarian authorities have committed violence, torture and ill-treatment against people who cross the border between Serbia and Hungary.

Beatings with belts and batons, various forms of humiliation, the use of pepper spray and tear gas were all reported as common deterrent measures, and prior to deportation, by Hungarian forces.

Angela Marcitic, one of Doctors Without Borders in Serbia, says: "The amount of injuries caused by violence that we treat on the Hungarian-Serbian border is unprecedented. Every week we see severe bruising, deep wounds and cuts, dislocations and fractures, often on the legs, hands and sometimes on the head. Several of the patients treated so far are children.

"The physical injuries we treat in medical consultations describe the violent behavior of the Hungarian police before the deportation to Serbia," says Marcitic. "Although we can treat some of the wounds, we are concerned about the long-term consequences of such injuries on their mental health."

MSF has also reported injuries from people falling from the four-meter-high system of fences and barbed wire along the border.

Recently, there have been many reports about the misbehavior of Hungarian border forces against immigrants. In recent months, the European Union has demanded a clear explanation from the authorities of these countries regarding the mistreatment of immigrants.
