Ukraine: a thousand children have been killed so far

Children are the most vulnerable social class in war.

Once again, as in all wars, reckless decisions by adults put children in grave danger.

According to figures confirmed by the United Nations, at least 972 children in Ukraine have been killed or injured in violence since the war escalated nearly six months ago, an average of more than five children a day.

The use of explosive weapons has caused more casualties among children. These weapons do not discriminate between civilians and soldiers, especially when used in densely populated areas.

Meanwhile, beyond the horror of children being killed or physically harmed in attacks, almost all children in Ukraine have been exposed to very traumatic events, and those fleeing violence are at serious risk of family separation, violence, abuse, sexual exploitation, and smuggling.

The start of the school year in less than a week is a reminder of how vulnerable children in Ukraine are.

Ukraine's education system has been devastated by escalating hostilities across the country. Schools have been targeted or used by the military, and as a result, families do not feel safe sending their children to school.

According to estimates, one out of every ten schools has been damaged or destroyed.

UNICEF continues to call for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and to protect all children from harm. This includes ending the indiscriminate use of explosive weapons in populated areas and attacks on civilian facilities and infrastructure.

Ukrainian children urgently need safety, stability, access to safe learning, child protection services and psychosocial support.
