British Christians welcome refugees

Churches will assist in the asylum process.

Changes in public opinion in recent years have led to new laws and changes in the Home Office's asylum policies. Especially since the election in 2019, the UK has been trying to reform its border controls, stop the flow of immigrants and establish more controls on the asylum process. This means that even if there is a visa application, the processing can be very slow.

However, the flow of asylum seekers continues to flow into the country. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, a total of 133094 refugees and 61968 asylum seekers living in the UK in 2019. In 2021 alone, the UK received 48,540 asylum applications, the highest number in nearly two decades and 63% higher in 2020.

This can do additional harm to those fleeing conflict, political repression, or persecution. Their lives are in limbo because the acceptance process is slow.

Under a plan announced in mid-April, some asylum seekers crossing the English Channel, especially single men entering by boat or truck, will be sent directly to Rwanda, a landlocked country in Central Africa, for further admission.

In the meantime, many churches have decided to apply for asylum so that the admission process does not take more than five weeks to nine months.

The Sanctuary  Foundation, which sponsors the project and assists the government in the Ukrainian refugee resettlement program, said in a report that more than 2,000 churches and evangelical schools have joined the program since March. Hundreds of churches announced that they would welcome asylum seekers with open arms. Cities like Bristol have since seen an increase in the number of asylum seekers in their churches. Anglican churches, Chinese Protestant churches, and evangelicals have all grown significantly in the past year in terms of these donations.
