Churches as refuges for Ukrainian asylum seekers

Churches in Ukraine's neighboring countries are among the community centers and camps that shelter refugees who have fled violence. They have temporarily changed the church to accommodate immigrants so that they can receive more support.

Polish Baptists have set up 40 refugee camps, according to the International Board of the South Baptist Convention Mission. Items such as mattresses, food and hygiene are provided to asylum seekers. Church members have also traveled to the border to help refugees cross the border.

Earlier this week, the United Nations reported that at least 227 civilians had been killed and more than 525 injured in Ukraine. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says the number of people who have crossed the border into Ukraine in the past 10 days and taken refuge in neighboring countries has reached 1.5 million.

This number of asylum seekers is unprecedented in Europe since the beginning of World War II.

An EU executive warned on Sunday that some 4 million Ukrainians could be displaced and that 7 million could be displaced internally.

Churches in Ukraine's neighboring countries have opened their doors to shelter and help refugees. As the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimated on Thursday one million people have fled Eastern Europe since the Russian invasion began last week.
