France has set five preconditions for a possible recognition of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
"I know they are making great efforts to gain legitimacy from the international community, but it is not enough to comment here and there on respect for women's rights," Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Wednesday (August 18th). "No, practical action must be taken in this direction."
"First, the Taliban must allow Afghans who want to leave the country out of fear," the French foreign minister said of the terms. The second step is that they should not allow Afghanistan to become a haven for terrorism, and they need to do so in a very tangible way. "They must also acknowledge that humanitarian aid can enter Afghanistan, respect the rights of citizens, especially women, and ultimately agree to a transitional government."
He said the conditions were necessary for their government to be recognized by the international community, and that once those things were done, France would consider what steps it would take, but in any case, "these steps must be taken and so far. "They have not been done."
