Increase in migration despite seasonal risks.
According to AFP, Italian coastguards rescued about 600 migrants in the Mediterranean between Monday and Tuesday night.
The rescue operation took place about 100 km off the coast of Calabria, Italy. A large ship and three boats arrived in the area to rescue the migrants.
The Navy says they also found a body in the water, which probably died a few days ago.
A total of 573 migrants were reportedly rescued from a fishing boat carrying a large number of passengers. The survivors include 59 young children, most of whom began the journey without parents.
According to officials, one of the survivors is in critical condition and should be taken to hospital immediately. The rest are transferred to the port of Augusta, and the island of Sicily.
According to the International Organization for Migration, the Mediterranean Sea is one of the most dangerous ways to migrate.
Since the beginning of this year, 10,750 migrants have arrived in Europe by sea. At least 229 people were killed during the same period. But the migrants continue their journey despite the unfavorable sea climate and its dangers.
