Ukraine: Five million children displaced

Ukraine: Five million children displaced

Lack of access to water, food and health are the main challenge.

"Of the 4.8  million displaced Ukrainian children, 2 million have fled as refugees and 2.8 million as IDPs" said Manuel Fantin, UNICEF's Director of Emergency Programs, who recently returned from war-torn Ukraine. "They have become homeless their own country."

The situation of children in Ukraine is worse in the cities of Mariupol and Kherson. In these areas, children and their families have been without regular tap water and sanitation, regular food supply and medical care for weeks. They have taken refuge in their homes and basements, waiting for the bombing and violence to end.

About two-thirds of the 7.5 million Ukrainian children have been displaced in the six weeks since the Russian-led invasion of Ukraine.

In addition to the millions of displaced and homeless Ukrainian children, about half of the 3.2 million children still living in Ukraine are at risk of food shortages.

At least 142 children have been killed and 229 injured in Russia's invasion of Ukraine, UNICEF's director of emergency programs said.

Ukraine's judiciary has said in a report that at least 186 children have been killed and 344 injured in Russian military strikes.

According to the United Nations, about two-thirds of Ukraine's population under the age of eighteen has been displaced since the beginning of the Russian-led invasion.
